Bruce Lee and the latest theory about his death: Excessive water intake

Martial arts legend Bruce Lee died on 20 July 1973. His death, at the age of 32, has always been shrouded in mystery. Now, almost half a century later, research published in the Clinical Kidney Journal has come up with a surprising new hypothesis about the cause of his death: with a high water intake stated as the cause: Hyponatremia led to cerebral oedema.

The conclusions of the investigation state that Bruce Lee died as a result of liver dysfunction. Specifically, a lack of ability to excrete enough water to maintain homeostasis, a state of equilibrium that the body needs to function normally. This could have fatal consequences and, according to the study, it did.

In fact, the researchers, who even ironically use the famous phrase "be water, my friend" popularized by Bruce Lee, point out some of these risks.

"This can lead to hyponatraemia, cerebral oedema and death within hours if excessive water intake is not matched by water excretion in the urine," the researchers state.

Risk factors: marijuana, alcohol, anti-inflammatory drugs ....

Research by Priscila Villalvazo, Raul Fernandez-Prado, Maria Dolores Sanchez Nino, Sol Carriazo, Beatriz Fernandez-Fernandez, Alberto Ortiz and Maria Vanessa Perez-Gomez points to some evidence that the martial arts expert may have consumed excess water on a regular basis and suffered hyponatremia, which ultimately led to his death.

Experts point out that Bruce Lee risked several factors, such as the consumption of alcohol, marijuana, the high rate of physical exercise, anti-epileptic drugs, steroids, diuretics, anti-inflammatory drugs, which can all lead to increased water consumption, and resulted in fatal cerebral oedema.

All other hypotheses ruled out

The researchers review, in the publication, the most accepted theories about Bruce Lee's death, including the official version (hypersensitivity to Equagesic, a drug that includes aspirin and meprobamate).

The more adventurous theories including murder by the mafia, cocaine or cannabis use, epilepsy, heart attack or even a family curse have been ruled out.
